Introducing the center:
1- History:
The establishment of the Cancer Research Center was provisionally approved by the Council for the Development of Medical Universities in February, 2017 following the agreement of the then Chancellor of the SKUMS and started to work in Hajar Hospital, Shahrekord.
2- Visions:
Cancer is rooted in the social, cultural, spiritual, and economic structure of community, social behaviors, decisions of policymakers and politicians, individual behaviors and the functions of cells and their constituents. In Iran, cancer is the third leading cause of death so that around 130 people die every day due to the disease.
2-1- General purpose:
Conducting research to prevent cancer and reduce its incidence and mortality; and appropriately treating cancer patients with a focus on patient, cost-effectiveness, and patient rehabilitation and the integration of education, research and services.
2-2- Specific objectives:
- Assisting in registering cancer cases in Iran, region and related clinical departments
- Conducting prevention and applied research to identify risk factors for cancer
- Offering practical solutions to reduce risk factors at the national, academic and individual scale based on research evidence
- Codifying public education protocols for people, health care providers, policymakers and politicians based on research evidence
- Developing treatment protocols based on research evidence and economic and social conditions of the country
- Determining cost-effectiveness of diagnostic and therapeutic measures, especially anti-cancer drugs
- Developing scientific protocols of palliative treatment based on research findings
- Conducting applied research to improve the mental, social and economic health of cancer patients
3- Perspective:
- Research on the causes of cancer and methods of cancer prevention
- Molecular and genetic investigations on the causes of cancer, genetic differences in individuals with respect to response to chemotherapy drugs
- Research on target therapy for cancers to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy drugs
- Research on epidemiology and environmental and regional causes of cancer in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province in collaboration with the Provincial Cohort Center
4- Mission:
- Conducting research to prevent cancer and reduce its incidence and mortality; and appropriately treating cancer patients with a focus on patient, cost-effectiveness, and patient rehabilitation and the integration of education, research and services
- Supporting research in cancer and practical and manufacturing activities related to the disease
- Establishing communication with other research centers at national and international scale and conducting collaborative research to train researchers in the field of cancer prevention and treatment
Research priorities:
A) Conducting basic research to:
1) Generate reliable knowledge and develop research projects related to cancer based on needs and priorities in Iran, and monitor their implementation
2) Create an environment conducive to research, exploration and communication for faculty members and researchers
3) Conduct epidemiological studies on cancer and seek out scientific response to the needs of national policymakers and managers
4) Establish constant communication with macro decision-making centers and actively contribute to identifying the challenges ahead and providing appropriate solutions by proposing research projects
B) Conducting applied research in:
1) New strategies for early diagnosis of cancer
2) New methods of cancer treatment
3) Establishment of tumor bank
4) Solutions to prevent cancer
